Are You Prepared For the 2007 Hurricane Season???

Hurricane experts are calling for a very active 2007 hurricane season and are predicting 17 named storms, 9 hurricanes and possibly 5 intense hurricanes.  History teaches that a lack of hurricane awareness and preparation are common threads among all major hurricane disasters.  By knowing your vulnerability and what actions you should take, you can reduce the effects of a hurricane disaster.  This year, Hurricane Preparedness Week is May 20 – May 26.  Houston has not been the direct target of any hurricane of recent years, but that could easily change by the next time you watch the evening news.  If a hurricane headed towards Houston tomorrow….would you be prepared?

Listed below are the most basic steps for hurricane preparedness:

1. LISTEN to local emergency officials for the latest information, and follow their instructions.  Listen to local TV and radio for important announcements and up-to-date media coverage. KTRH-AM 740 is the designated Emergency Alert Station for the Houston area. Have a battery operated radio with extra batteries on hand.

2. HAVE A PLAN OF ACTION for any emergency.  If you must relocate, have a predetermined destination, route and alternate route – whether out of the area or to the nearest shelter.

3. BE PREPARED – Have these emergency supplies on hand:

-         Non-perishable food items and water in containers (5 gallons of water per person).

-         More than one flashlight and extra batteries.

-         First-aid kit, along with any prescription medicine.

-         A full tank of gas in your automobile.

-         Plywood and/or plastic sheeting – for water leaks, broken window, etc.

-         Important papers in a waterproof bag (Ziploc perhaps).

Know the difference between a HURRICANE WATCH and a HURRICANE WARNING.

A HURRICANE WATCH is issued when a hurricane becomes a threat to this coastal area within 36 hours.  Everyone in the area covered by the watch should listen for further advisories and be prepared to act promptly if a hurricane warning or relocation is recommended.  A HURRICANE WARNING is issued when hurricane winds of 74 MPH or higher, or a combination of dangerously high water and rough seas, are expected within this area within 24 hours.
